It is no surprise that the stakes were high as the CHS girls volleyball team would to host South Brunswick after a 2-1 loss under their belt. Expectations had the lady Patriots worried, but confidence and focus brought home the glory. The Vikings, with much dedication, entered the game with no sweat as they knew that with hard work, another win would come to improve their record. The Patriots on the other hand had one or two things to say about that, but actions speak louder than words as they refuse to let up and prove once again, that Colonia is not a joke.
After back to back points, it seemed that Colonia was beginning to feel momentum as the tides turned against the Vikings. A mistake by the Patriots was biting them back when South Brunswick took advantage and equaled the intensity. With a decent lead of 6 points, the Vikings were slowly coming back and tying. This of course did not scare the girls as they easily made 3 more points and ended the first leg 25-21 with a beautiful point winning spike by Senior, Mackenzie Williams.
The Colonia girls showed no fear, not during a point gained or lost. “We stayed focused,” Senior, Amarah Ellahi exclaimed, “If you believe in yourself, anything is possible.” After a consistent lead, the girls managed to put the game away with a 25-17 victory ending the game 2-0. Junior, Christina Blauvelt received a total of 9 digs and 3 aces as for Junior, Sam Ashton finished the game with 17 assists. Seniors, Mackenzie Williams, Heather Passarelli, Junior, Manuela Martinez, and Sophomore, Camila Camacho, combined a total of 19 kills.
“When they beat us the first time it was really hard on us because it was our first lost. We knew that we could beat them so that’s what motivated us to push harder and beat them. We know that the way we play as a team, no one else can beat us,” Camacho admitted as she was faced with the reality that Colonia is a target in this division with now a record of 14-2. “It’s obviously really good that we’re one of the best teams, but we should, in a way, be nervous. At the same time, we know that we have to live up to what they say. We are really good and we need to play like that. We can never be nervous or scared,” Camacho continued.
For many, this is the first of many to come, but for others, this is their last opportunity to shine and put a trophy in that case. Many like Camacho and Ellahi, strongly believe that they will win the division and county championship. Beating South Brunswick sent a message to many other opponents, but for this team, as Ellahi the libero exclaimed, “It felt amazing (beating South Brunswick) and it just proved to us that we can do it, we can win the championship.” So watch out, because you have got a run for your money as the volleyball girls go for gold and are focused on one thing and one thing only.
